TGA Scoring/Handicapping
What are the goals of the TGA scoring system?
- create a fair and equitable system for allocating Tournament prizes
- create a fair and equitable system for allocating season-long 'Order of Merit' points
- to give every member the opportunity to compete at the top of all TGA Leaderboards
- to eliminate sandbagging
- to keep all Players 'grinding' to save every possible shot
How does it Work?
Each TGA Tournament will have two flights (divisions). Players will compete against other players within their flight for prizes and Order of Merit points for that tournament. The median handicap index of the field will be calculated before each tournament and used to create two balanced flights.
How are prizes allocated in each Tournament?
(1st Flight)
1st low Gross
1st low Net
2nd low Net
3rd low net
KP par 3
(2nd Flight)
1st low Gross
1st low Net
2nd low Net
3rd low net
KP par 3
How are Order of Merit points allocated in each Tournament?
The allocation of Order of Merit points will be as follows (awarded to each flight in each Tournament)…
| Positions | Points |
|---|---|
| 1st low Gross | 2000 pts |
| 1st low Net | 1800 pts |
| 2nd low Net | 1600 pts |
| 3rd low Net | 1400 pts |
| 4th low Net | 1200 pts |
| 5th low Net | 1000 pts |
| 6th low Net | 800 pts |
| 7th low Net | 700 pts |
| 8th low Net | 600 pts |
| 9th low Net | 500 pts |
| 10th low Net | 400 pts |
| 11th + | 200 pts |
| Closest to Pin par 3 | 500 pts |
| Stat Master | 500 pts |
How is your Handicap Index calculated for each event?
our past TGA scores will factor into your handicap index for each Tournament (floating handicap). Your past performance will be given 25% weight and will adjust your handicap to a small degree. 75% weight will be given to the handicap index which you submitted for that Tournament. How does it work?...
If this is your 1st TGA Tournament -- attested handicap to be submitted/confirmed using the honour system. If you are unsure of what your index is please contact Trevor Fraser.
If you have played 1 or more TGA Tournaments -- submitted handicap index will then be adjusted using the following calculation…
- Using your previous Gross score(s), calculate the average # of shots over/under.
- Subtract submitted handicap index.
- Multiply that number by 25%
- Add that total to the Handicap Index that the Player submits.
Example: Player submits a handicap index of 17.3. He has played 2 TGA events and shot 84 – 86 on par72 courses. His new adjusted handicap index will be…
(+26) / 2 = +13 average p/round
13 – 17.3 = (-4.3)
(-4.3)(0.25) = (-1.1) adjusted differential
(-1.1) + 17.3 = 16.2
What is a 'handicap index' compared to a 'course handicap'?
A "Handicap index" is a numerical measurement of a player's potential (not actual) scoring ability on a course of standard difficulty. The Handicap Index is calculated using the best 10 of the player's last 20 rounds and updated with each new round played. The Handicap Index travels with the golfer from course to course and is adjusted up or down depending on the length and difficulty of the course played, resulting in a "Course Handicap". The Course Handicap is the number of strokes a golfer receives from a specific set of tees at the course played and represents the number of strokes he would require to play equitably against a "scratch" golfer (a golfer with a Handicap Index of "0.0'). The more difficult the golf course, the more strokes the golfer receives and vice versa. (as written in the RCGA Handicapping Manual)
Your course handicap will be calculated by TGA and shown on your customized scorecard.
